Extracting the Digit

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

It’s come down to the fact that I’ve got a bucket-load of work to do over the next few days, and I need to seriously put my head down and get it done.

How on earth did I get so busy all of a sudden? Two voice recording sessions this week for the cartoon job (plus some potential re-takes to do at some stage), the revision stage of this esession job, a hefty bag of T3E homework from the get together on the weekend (as well as another behind the scenes video to hack together) and now I’ve gone and agreed to throw some keyboards and backing vocals on an old friend’s project (and he’s working in Pro Tools, so I’ll have to remember how to use that particular flavour of arbitrary limitation software.

We’re hoping to finalise our house-buying ventures this week as well, and some semblance of a personal life would be nice to squeeze in there too, if I can swing it.

To be fair, the T3E stuff has been kicking around for a good while, and it’s my own fault I’ve let it slip until now. Plus I didn’t have to agree to this keyboard/bg vocals job, but I want to… dammit ;) .  It’s a good dose of ever-so-slightly-cheesy-but-very-well-executed symphonic metal, and a nice change of pace from the wacky, cliched, and serious tunes that my other three current projects provide respectively (I’ll leave it to the reader to divine which project corresponds to which adjective :P ).

But for now, the room next door is full of noisy animators playing with their Wii and talking about colour-blindness, so I think that’s my cue to go and have lunch.

Gainfully employed

The alleged cartoon job became miraculously tangible again this week, which was quite a relief. There was a touch-and-go moment where I sortofalmostkindof accepted a job elsewhere, and then found out this one was actually on, and then might have rather annoyed some people with my vascillating.

But such is life… I hope the other fellas find someone good for the position, and there are no hard feelings over the long-term.

Musically there has been a bit of a trickle of progress on T3E#2, but mainly Knotty, Cornel and I have been working on this new groovy laid back (*cough*coverband*ahem*) thing we’ve been toying with. That, and preparing for Knotty’s impending rehearsal-themed 30th birthday bash on the weekend.

It’s been bitterly cold the last few days, after a brief mild spell. I actually love cold weather, but I’m about done with this winter to be honest. We’re very nearly out of firewood, and I am a little worried about the power bill which should be in the mail any day now.

Also, less that 4 weeks until W-day! I think everything is pretty much in-hand, although I have yet to buy a suit, which I think will be fairly much mandatory. I was considering suggesting a jeans & T-shirts affair, but somehow I suspect not all parties would be on board with that one.

It’s frickin’ freezing in here Mr Bigglesworth

I’m at home today rather than at the on-again off-again phantom cartoon job (I’m thinking of starting to refer to it as “the alleged job”). The living room with it’s woodheatery goodness is beckoning me, but when I go out there I just end up reading a book or watching a DVD, as opposed to up here in the studio where I can at least put up the pretense of getting on with some work.

I’m just consolidating the two different Logic projects in which I did T3E demo vocals at various points (bad bad project management, I know) so that I can email it out to the ravenous hordes. Well… the rest of the band at least.

There’s been some debate over the chorus I’ve written. I really like it, Knotty quite likes it, and it’s received a resounding “meh” from the rest of the band. Personally I’m inclined to say I’m the one who has to sing it, and therefore I trump them, nyah nyah, but it has occurred to me that it might not be the most diplomatic approach.

Ok, it’s done rendering - time to send that bad boy off. Huzzah!

The cartoon place just sent everyone home until they can get some contracty stuff sorted out. No job for you!

Getting quite annoying, this is.

Time to bust out the old CV again perhaps…

Resisting temptation

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Since I’ve started back at work doing the cartoon stuff, I’ve had to get used to wandering around the Hobart CBD at lunchtime with not much to do other than window shop. It can be very difficult indeed to resist the temptation to buy new toys.

I can proudly proclaim that willpower has won the day thus far, and I do not yet own a panflute.

Well now, this looks a bit more lived in

I’ve just gone and imported the last couple of years worth of blogger posts into the new digs here, so it almost looks as if I’ve had this site for a while now.

Apart from the bog-standard template, and the fact that there’s no music available just yet.

But give it time - all good things…

I’m back at the cartoon job for now, and very pleased to be here. Had a voice recording session last night, and it was as if I’d never left. In a good way!
